Truly utile book
I have gorgeous much each how-to sewing book out there, and this one is by far the best/most utile for my purposes. I like clothes with simple lines but interesting details, and am fussy when it comes to finishing work. The photos and illustrations are first-rate, very clear and detailed, and the text is magnificent as well. This is not just a book for beginners, in spite of the title. It covers everything in regards to tops, skirts and pants from the fundamentals through a heap of pretty modern techniques. The division on fitting is particularly good. The book’s special and significant stress is on high-quality but simple construction techniques. I actually hope they do a sequel on jackets. And a hard-cover for this price!
Long on Blab, Short on Techniques
I got this book principally hoping for a good reference on making knit tops, and also as a popular topic book for other wardrobe pieces in this combining of the Easy Guide books. The book itself looks impressive and authorized from the outside.
Unfortunately it just doesn’t deliver in spite of the title. For one thing,the author isn’t much on using sergers. Knit tanks and t-shirts beg for serged seams and coverstitched hems and bindings. The notion that everyone doesn’t have a serger is a poor pardon for leaving them out altogether. It would have been nice to have more proficiencies using the capablenesses of newer machines.
The other failing is that closely no modern edge finishes are discussed. Instead the author recommends that you get galore knit fabric and try to figure out how it’s done on your own. In addition, she advises the reader to sneak around in RTW shops with a notepad in hopes of unlocking the mysteries of ordinarily applied construction techniques. Quite honestly, I may do that without paying twenty bucks for a sewing book.
Mostly useful; poor illustration
I ordered this book because I love Marcy Tilton’s patterns and her website. But I was sort of disappointed with this book. For one thing, there is at least one in truth confusing, and probably merely wrong, illustration in this book. On p. 40, there is a picture illustrating how to add a bust dart to a tee shirt, an alteration that I have to make frequently. Tilton justifiedly recommends putting this dart in the armhole rather than in the side seam. But whoever did the illustration had no understanding of darts: the illustrator drew the dart pointing the defective direction, and added the extra fabric right on top of the dart rather of above it. I had to go to Marcy’s web site and look at her video excerption to figure out how to do this correctly.
Threads applied to have beautifully illustrated instructions in it is magazines, but not long ago the illustrations have gotten less clear and more confusing. I guess this book is a symptom of this. Probably it wasn’t Marcy’s fault.
